Born in Nelson, Lancashire, Eric worked in engineering
before joining an antiques shipping firm in the early 70s. He moved to London in 1975 and
joined Bonhams auction house as a porter. Eric's love of antiques (inherited from his
parents) took him swiftly to the top where he is now the Director od Ceramics and Works of
Art. He is a leading authority on 19th and 20th-century decorative arts and European and
Oriental ceramics from the 17th century to the present. Eric is responsible for Bonham's
internationally renowned sales of Lalique glass.
Best known for his regular appearances on the BBC Antiques
Roadshow (the most popular show on CBC Newsworld), Eric's genial personality and
obvious sense of fun make him a very popular member of the team of experts. He has been a
consultant on Miller's Antiques Price Guides since their inception and has
written three of their Antiques Checklists (Victoriana, Art Nouveau,
and Art Deco). Recent books include Victoriana to Art Deco, Royal
Memorabilia and Discovering Antiques. Eric is a regular contributor to the
BBC Homes and Antiques magazine and a frequent guest on numerous TV shows. He has
recently organized The Eric Knowles Antiques and Collectors' Club. Eric is one of
those rare individuals with the gift for sharing his considerable knowledge in a way that
is exciting and easy to understand.
