Dennis Harwood
Dennis is an English chef with a passion for collecting Carlton Ware. Whenever he
saw a piece he wanted, he would make arrangements to cater a banquet to earn the money to
pay for it. He has won many awards for his culinary skills, including a Gold Medal in 1974
for "A Typical British Meal." From 1979 until he retired in 1994, Dennis taught
chefs at the catering colleges in Coventry and Birmingham. His students are now working
around the world from the QEII to London's Dorchester hall.
Dennis has been collecting Carlton for almost as long as he has
been cooking. Although his flat in Kenilworth, a small village outside
Stratford-upon-Avon, is packed with wonderful Carlton examples from the 1920s and 30s, he
is always on the lookout for more. He has been a speaker at the Carlton Ware Collectors
International Conference in Stoke-on-Trent. Dennis is now a partner in Much Ado About
Deco, an antique shop in the Stratford-upon-Avon Antiques Centre, where friends and
customers gather to talk about Carlton. He is also a partner in the quarterly Warwick Art
Deco Fair which attracts dealers and collectors from all over England. Dennis has been
coming to Canada for more than 15 years and many pieces in his collection were bought in
Canadian antique shows and flea markets.
